UK Regulations for Plug-In Solar
Everything you need to know about staying legal.
The G98 Standard
Plug-in solar systems in the UK fall under the G98 connection standard (formerly G83). This allows small-scale generation systems of upto 800w without prior approval from your DNO.
DNO Notification
Under G98, you must notify your Distribution Network Operator within 28 days of installing your system. This is a simple online form or letter not an application for approval. Your DNO cannot refuse a compliant G98 installation.
We include a pre-filled DNO notification template with every kit. You can find your DNO using the postcode lookup at Energy Networks Association (energynetworks.org).
Planning Permission
In most cases, you do not need planning permission for a plug-in solar panel. Ground mounted and balcony solar panels are generally considered Permitted Development in England, Wales, and Scotland, provided they:
- Are not on a listed building or in a conservation area
- Do not protrude significantly above the roofline (for roof installations)
- Are removed when no longer needed
If you live in a listed building, conservation area, or National Park, check with your local planning authority before installing.
Renters
If you rent, you technically need your landlord’s permission to install any fixture including a plug-in solar panel. Because our systems require no drilling (with the right mount) and leave no permanent marks, many landlords are happy to agree. We can provide a simple landlord consent letter template on request.
Leasehold & Flats
If you own a leasehold flat, check your lease and speak to your freeholder before installing on a balcony. Many leases allow this for systems under a certain size.
Grid Export & SEG
If your meter is a traditional non smart meter, any surplus power you generate simply reduces your bill by slowing the meter. If you have a smart meter, your supplier may be able to enrol you in the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), paying you for each unit you export. Contact your energy supplier to find out.
